It is one of the skin cancer known as basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma begins in basal cells, a type of skin cell that produces new cells when old cells die. Basal cell carcinoma often appears as a slightly transparent bump on the skin, although it may take other forms. Basal cell carcinoma occurs most often in sun-exposed areas, such as the head and neck. Most basal cell carcinomas are thought to be caused by prolonged exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. Avoid the sun and use sunscreen to protect against basal cell carcinoma.
