Blastomycosis is a fungal infection caused by a special type of fungus known as Blastomyces. The infection cause flu or lungs infections like symptoms that includes fever, cough, sneezing, headache, muscle aches, chills, etc. The prognosis of blastomycosis is variable; most patients recover easily, but immunocompromised patients have a prognosis that can vary from good to poor. The disease is caused by inhaling the spores of the fungus.
The Blastomyces fungus grow in damp places usually in wood or soil.
The infection should be treated by the health professional and follow-up is very important in this case, as the chances of reinfection are there.
The fungi can infect humans and animals (for example, dogs, cats, bats, lions, horses) and cause blastomycosis in them.
