Boils and carbuncles are painful, pus-filled bumps that form under the skin when bacteria infect and inflame one or more of their hair follicles. Boils usually start with red, tender bumps. The clumps fill quickly with pus, they enlarge and become more painful until they tear and drip. A carbuncle is an accumulation of boils that form an area of contiguous infection under the skin.
