Summary about Cross Bites in English

A crossbite is a condition that affects the alignment of your teeth. You have a crossbite if your upper teeth fit behind your lower teeth when your mouth is closed or at rest. There is a possibility that teeth in the front or the back of your mouth could be affected by this condition.

A crossbite only affects a group of teeth, whereas an underbite affects all of them. Both of these conditions are examples of dental malocclusion.

Symptoms of Cross Bites

If you face any of the below-mentioned symptoms, you can have a crossbite:

  • Inability to speak properly
  • The upper and lower rows of your teeth do not touch
  • Pain in at least one of your tooth
  • Pain in your jaw
  • Unbearable headaches
  • Always biting on your tongue and inner cheek while speaking or eating

Causes of Cross Bites

  • Crossbites have two leading causes: genetic causes and developmental causes.
  • Teeth alignment and jaw structure, like other physical characteristics, are inherited. Crossbites are inherited, so if a parent, grandparent, or other relative has one, there's a good chance that a child will inherit one as well.

A crossbite can be caused by several factors during dental development, including:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Losing the baby teeth too early
  • Prolonged use of a pacifier or bottle
  • Tongue-thrusting
  • Growing the adult teeth

Treatment

  • Posterior crossbites (crossbites in back teeth) are frequently treated in children and teenagers by broadening the upper teeth and jaw. Depending on the individual, this can be accomplished with special appliances or braces.
  • Crossbites can be treated with braces or Invisalign in some teenagers and adults.
  • Front teeth crossbites are frequently treated with braces or special retainers.
  • Crossbites can be so severe in some cases that jaw surgery is required.
