Degenerative disc disease occurs when normal changes in the vertebral discs are painful. The intervertebral discs are like buffers between the vertebrae or bones of the spine. They make sure your back stays flexible so that it can bend and turn. As they get older, they may show signs of wear. They start breaking and may not work as well. Almost all everybody discs collapse over time, but not everyone gets hurt. If the intervertebral discs are the reason you are injured, you have degenerative disc disease.
