Summary about Excessive Over-Jet in English

An overjet occurs when the upper teeth protrude outward and rest on top of the lower teeth. Having an overjet affects more than just your appearance. Some overjet are minor and barely noticeable, whereas others are severe. If you have an overjet, also known as buck teeth, you may be self-conscious and hide your smile. You may even avoid social situations, leading to feelings of isolation and depression. However, there are treatments available that can help.

Symptoms of Excessive Over-Jet

Excessive overjet has the following symptoms:

  • You may also have difficulty chewing, drinking, or biting.
  • It may even result in jaw pain.
  • In addition to difficulty biting or chewing, poor tooth alignment can make it difficult to close your lips completely.
  • You may also develop speech problems or bite your tongue or the inside of your cheek regularly.
  • Keep in mind that when you close your mouth, it's normal for your upper front teeth to be slightly in front of your lower teeth — they're usually 2 millimeters (mm) apart. However, if you have an overjet, your upper front teeth may extend more than 2 mm in front of your lower teeth.

Causes of Excessive Over-Jet

An overjet does not have a single cause but several factors that can contribute to this condition.

  • An overjet can be inherited in some cases. If your mother or father has one, you may develop one as well.
  • This can happen if your lower jawbone is underdeveloped, causing your upper teeth to protrude further than they should.
  • An overjet can also form if you suck your thumb or fingers as a child.
  • A tongue thrust and using a pacifier for an extended period can cause an overjet.

Treatment

Treatment may be unnecessary if you have a mild or slight overjet. However, if you are self-conscious about your teeth alignment or if problems arise, treatment options include:

  • Braces- Dental braces are used to gradually shift teeth into a new position to straighten and align them. Overjet braces come in a variety of styles, including traditional metal braces and removable clear aligners. The time it takes to correct an overjet with dental braces depends on the severity of the overjet. Braces are typically worn for 18 to 24 months.
  • Veneers- Your doctor may also recommend veneers to treat an overjet. This is a piece of porcelain that is attached to the front of your teeth. It's a one-of-a-kind design that closely resembles the natural appearance of your teeth. Veneers can be used to conceal or conceal misaligned teeth and other flaws. Traditional porcelain veneers have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.
  • Dental Bonding- Your dentist will use a composite resin to change the shape and size of your teeth with dental bonding. This can help to conceal protruding teeth. The resin is as strong as natural teeth, and once installed, the bonding can last for years before needing to be replaced or repaired.

Preventive Measures of Excessive Over-Jet

Excess overjet cannot be prevented; instead, it can be treated by going to the dentist and keeping good oral hygiene.
