Hiccups are an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm the muscles separating the chest from the abdomen and playing an important role in breathing. After each contraction, a sudden closing of the vocal cords occurs, creating a characteristic "hic" sound. Hiccups can be caused by a large meal, alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages, or sudden excitement. In some cases, hiccups may indicate a basic condition. In most cases, hiccups usually last only a few minutes. In rare cases, hiccups can last for several months. This can lead to weight loss and fatigue.
