Summary about Open-Bites in English

An open bite refers to a malocclusion in which the teeth are not aligned properly when the jaws are closed. Usually, when people talk about an open bite, they mean an anterior open bite. An anterior open bite is characterized by the front upper and lower teeth slanting outward, so their surfaces don't touch when they close the mouth.

Symptoms of Open-Bites

The most obvious sign of an open bite is the inability to completely close your mouth so that your front or back teeth do not touch on the top and bottom.

Other signs of having an open bite include:

  • Having trouble making contact with upper and lower teeth
  • Improper teeth alignment
  • Less-pronounced chin
  • Problems with swallowing or chewing
  • Speech problems like a lisp
  • Difficulties biting food using the front teeth
  • Pain when chewing or biting
  • Unattractive smile

Causes of Open-Bites

There are four leading causes of open bites:

  • Thumb or pacifier sucking: When someone sucks on their thumb, a pacifier, or another foreign object such as a pencil, their teeth are strained. This may result in an open bite.
  • Tongue thrusting: When a person speaks or swallows, their tongue is pushed between their upper and lower front teeth, resulting in an open bite. Gaps between teeth may result due to this.
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder: Chronic jaw pain is caused by TMJ disorders. People sometimes use their tongue to push their teeth apart and reposition their jaw more comfortably, resulting in an open bite.
  • Skeletal problem: When your jaws grow apart instead of parallel to each other, this happens, and it's often influenced by genetics.

Treatment

Following are the treatments for open bites:

  • Braces are a convenient, effective, and affordable method to correct an open bite by an expert orthodontic provider.
  • Invisalign is another treatment for closing open bites.
  • Occasionally, in case of a severe open bite, oral surgery might be required: this is a rare occurrence and only in the most complex cases that cannot be treated alone by orthodontic intervention.

Preventive Measures of Open-Bites

To prevent having open bites, you must:

  • Avoid tongue thrusting.
  • Avoid pacifier or thumb sucking.

Once you get Invisalign or braces, you should use retainers to keep your smile in place and the open bite from coming back.
