Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the tissue that acts as a linker between the heel bone and the toes. The disease gets its name from the ligament that is the plantar fascia. The normal function of this tissue is to absorb the shock and stress whenever a person walks, runs, jogs, jumps or does any other physical activity that involves feet.

This tissue gets damaged every day because of the continuous stress on it. Sometimes, this damage is greater than what the tissue can bear which leads to tearing of the ligament or permanent damage. As a result of this damage, the tissue becomes inflamed causing severe pain. This severe pain is felt when a person takes the first few steps in the morning after waking up or after completing an exercise.

Plantar fasciitis can occur as a result of some underlying disease or by itself. This disease is often confused with the heel spur. The two are related, but they are quite different from each other. A heel spur is calcaneus of the foot, a small hook of bone that forms on the foot. Heel spurs are not usually serious and often do not show any symptoms.
