A thumb sprain is an injury which happens when the soft tissues of thumb get damaged. It is caused by a forceful hit of the thumb against a hard surface or too much bending of thumb in one direction. A sprained thumb can cause a severe feeling of pain, discomfort, and stiffness at the base of thumb near the palm. A person may suffer difficulty in grabbing or pinching objects, or thumb movement.
Right after you’ve sprained your thumb, use the PRICE approach (P=pressure, R=rest, I=ice, C=compression, E=elevation).
