Endometrial cancer is cancer that starts in the womb. The uterus is the hollow, pear-shaped pelvic organ in women in which the fetus develops. Uterine cancer is the abnormal growth of uterus (female reproductive organ) cells. Endometrial cancer begins in the cell layer that forms the uterine lining (endometrium) of the uterus. Endometrial cancer is sometimes called uterine cancer. Other types of cancer can develop in the uterus, including uterine sarcoma, but they are much less common than uterine cancer.
