How can I find treatment of Warts?

What is Warts?

Warts are benign or non-cancerous growth on the skin. They are caused when the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) affects the top layer of the skin. This virus usually gets in from a cut or injury on the skin.

Warts are contagious which means that they can spread from one person to another by contact. Warts are usually rough and skin-colored, but they can also be flat, smooth, and dark black, gray, or brown.

These are common, particularly in childhood. Some studies suggest that one in five children have warts. Most commonly children of 12-16 years of age get warts. Many warts go away without any treatment but for others, it is important to consult a dermatologist.

Moreover, it is seen that people with weakened immune systems or autoimmune diseases are more susceptible to HPV.

Warts Diagnosis

The doctor normally diagnoses warts by looking at the bumps and outgrowths. In some cases, the doctor may prescribe a biopsy (a sample of the skin growth) to test for HPV.

Warts Treatment

Many types of warts go away on their own. The immune system fights off the HPV and cures the warts itself. But in some cases, the warts do not go away on their own and cause pain. In that case, the doctors prescribe warts treatment. Common treatments of warts are as follows:

  • Topical Warts Removal Medications

Over-the-counter wart removal medications have salicylic acid. This dissolves warts one layer at a time. They come in get, patch, and liquid form. It can take three months or more to treat warts via topical chemicals.

  • Cryotherapy

In cryotherapy, the warts are usually frozen with liquid nitrogen. They become hard and a blister is formed. They blister and wart eventually peel off. This treatment works better when you follow up the treatment with salicylic acid.

  • Cantharidin

Cantharidin is applied on the wart which makes a blister. When the blister dries after a week, the warts come off. It is a common way to treat warts in children because it is a painless method.

  • Laser Treatment

Laser treatment is also a method to burn, cut blood vessels, and remove warts. The laser treatment might leave a scar on the skin.

  • Curettage and Electrosurgery

In Curettage, the wart is scraped off with a sharp knife or a spoon-shaped tool. Whereas in Electrosurgery, the wart is burnt. Electrosurgery is a good and effective treatment for filiform, foot warts, and common warts. The doctor may scrape the wart off before or after electrosurgery.

Other methods such as immunotherapy, excision, injections, etc are also used to treat different types of warts.
