Asking for Brother, Male, 26 years old, Lahore
My brother was diagnosed Acanthosis Nigricans, who is overweight with abdominal fat. He was prescribed Glucophage 500mg 1+1. As per mayoclinic.com most common reason of AN is Insulin resistance. Probably thats is why Glucophage is being prescribed. Is Fasting Serum Insulin Level test authentic? Are there any other drug treatment to treat/cure IR? How long at least Glucophage should be taken to effectively treat Insulin resistance? thanks.

Dr. Muhammad Tabish Raza gave detailed reply to the post. Now it has been deleted along my response to Dr. Muhammad Tabish Raza's reply.
I don't know why?
Testing really depends on if you are suspecting other endocrine causes of weight gain ( cushings and acromegaly) both of which are very rare. He really needs to do lifestyle modification and loose weight. Monitor A1c and lipids, TSH. I agree with the use of Glucophage.
Hope this helps.

thanks Dr Awais Masood for detailed reply.
Now the dosage of have been increased to Glucophage 850mg 1+1.
Will monitor A1c and lipids, TSH.
regarding lipids, i have a question that as long as a person takes atorvastatin 10mg daily, the lipids are under normal range, whenever he stops the lipids went up, but not too high?
This is latest Lipid Profile report done when not taking Lipitor 10mg.
Cholesterol 236
TG 241
HDL 38
LDL 151
This is past Lipid Profile report done while taking Lipitor 10mg.
Cholesterol 124
TG 154
HDL 39
LDL 54
So how should he take Atorvastatin to keep lipids under control while being on the minimum non-frequent non-daily dose of Atorvastatin?
thanks in advance.
