Your hair is the integral part of your personality. Having long shiny and thick hair is like a cherry on the top for your beauty. But unfortunately, now a days due to poor dietary intake and lifestyle choices, having good hair growth is like a dream. In this time of chaos and busy life routine, every one wants to have a short cut to get the better result for health and beauty. Use of biotin for hair growth, is one of those remedies that people use to improve their hair quality and quantity.

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is a B vitamin. Biotin is a popular over-the-counter supplement that promotes healthy hair growth. It is a water soluble vitamin that has many health benefits, but most importantly it has hair thickening effect. It is a vitamin B that is necessary for the body to obtain energy and nutrients from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Apart from this, it helps in boosting your immunity, protects you’re the heart, promotes brain function, etc.

Does Biotin Help Increase Hair Growth?

Biotin is available in the form of supplements and added in the hair care products like shampoos. Whether it is consumed orally in food or supplement, or lathered topically on your hair like shampoos or hair mask, biotin will help in hair growth.

But there is very less scientific research that supports the role of biotin in hair growth. Biotin supplementation may be beneficial for people who are truly deficient in biotin, but biotin deficiency is uncommon in the general population. While some shampoos contain biotin, there is no evidence that it works. Consuming foods high in vitamins and minerals will improve overall hair health.

Biotin is found in many foods, so deficiency is uncommon in healthy people who eat a well-balanced diet. Although uncommon, biotin deficiency can result in skin rashes, brittle nails, and hair thinning and loss. This is due to the vitamin’s role in the production of keratin.

Biotin supplements and biotin-added hair products are frequently advertised to promote healthy hair growth or thicker, voluminous hair. Despite these claims, there is limited evidence that supplementing with biotin or lathering it through your hair promotes hair growth in non-deficient people.

Research on Biotin For Hair Growth:

Women with thinning hair were given an oral supplement containing biotin and several other ingredients or a placebo twice daily for 90 days in one 2015 study.

Participants in the study who took the supplement containing biotin and other ingredients experienced not only a reduction in hair shedding, but also significant hair growth in the areas affected by hair loss.

But the result is not confirmed, as the other ingredients used as a supplement may also be responsible for this result.

What are the Causes of Hair Loss?

Genetics, certain medications, and underlying conditions such as depression and stress are all common causes of hair loss. Consult a doctor if your hair loss is causing you concern. They may perform a physical examination and investigate whether your diet or hair care routine is to blame. Furthermore, you may be deficient in certain vitamins, which provide the building blocks required to regrow healthy hair.

Because of the numerous factors involved in hair loss and thinning, supplementing with biotin without first determining the cause can prevent or delay appropriate treatment in cases where a biotin deficiency isn’t to blame.

Biotin Recommended Dose for Hair Growth:

The amount of biotin you should take each day is debatable and is thought to vary depending on your age. Newborn babies require only 5 micrograms (mcg) per day, whereas adults should get at least 30 mcg and breastfeeding women should get 35 mcg or more. Because biotin is found in a variety of foods, it would be unusual for anyone to be deficient in biotin.

Adults can easily achieve a biotin intake of 30 mcg per day by eating biotin-containing foods such as meat, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, and certain vegetables such as sweet potatoes, spinach, and broccoli.

If you choose to supplement, biotin can be taken alone or in combination with other B-complex vitamins in a multivitamin. Most biotin for hair growth supplement manufacturers/brands recommends taking 2-5 milligrams (2,000-5,000 mcg) of biotin per day, and many supplements are sold under different brand names, indicating a 5000 mcg (5 mg) size.

Biotin consumption in Western countries, excluding the United States, is estimated to be 35–70 mcg per day. Biotin deficiency is uncommon, and most people in the United States get enough naturally from gastrointestinal bacteria and a well-balanced diet.

A biotin supplement can help restore hair health and growth by correcting a biotin deficiency. There is no strong evidence to support the use of biotin supplements or biotin-added hair products to promote hair growth in people who are not deficient.

How Much Biotin is too Much?

Because it is water-soluble, biotin taken as a dietary supplement is relatively safe and unlikely to cause toxic effects. However, an overdose of biotin, on the other hand, can cause insomnia, excessive thirst, and urination.

Taking them can also raise your blood biotin levels, which can interfere with certain lab tests, such as those used to measure thyroid hormones, vitamin D, and heart health. So it is important to talk to your doctor before adding any supplements in your daily routine.

It is important to consult a dermatologist for hairs to rule out the root cause of your hair loss rather introducing yourself with different supplements on your own.

    Bottom-line:

Biotin is an essential vitamin that can be consumed from different foods. Its deficiency is very rare. But if you are not taking proper diet, you can take biotin supplement as it is totally safe to use. But its contribution in hair growth is not proved by any research. It may improve your overall health including your hair volume as it is an essential vitamin that helps in protein synthesis.
