Reading Time: 3 minutes

Taking care of older parents requires dedication of your time and energy, certain steps has to be taken to provide them a secure and healthy atmosphere. Changes in body posture and gait are common with aging. Changes within the muscles, joints, and bones have an effect on our posture and walk, and it may result in weakness and slowed or restricted movement as we age.

Aging Changes

People commonly lose bone mass as they age, particularly women after climacteric. The bones lose calcium and other important minerals. Between every bone in the spine, there is a gel-like cushion. The center of the body or the trunk becomes shorter as the disks gradually lose fluid and become thinner, which then lead to back & hip injuries and results in Groin Pain, Hamstring Tendinitis & Facet Joint Pain.

The foot arches become less distinct, contributing to a minor loss of height. The long bones of the arms and legs are more brittle & frail, attributable to loss of some very important minerals. However, they do not change their length. The joints become stiffer or arthritic and less flexible. Fluid within the joints might decrease. This is common in the shoulder area and some parents at old age could suffer from Frozen Shoulder, Rotator Cuff Tendonitis & other partial Tears as they are very common.

Hip and knee joints may begin to lose its cartilage & as proclaimed by Dr. Muhammad Abdul Wajid – Orthopedic Surgeon, many old patients visit & consult him for Knee & Hip Replacements encountered by Meniscus, Ligaments, Cartilage Defects & Patellar Tendinitis.

The joint of the fingers lose its cartilage and the bones thicken slightly. Muscles are less toned or healthy and less able to bond because of changes in the muscle tissue. Muscles & joints of ankle could become rigid with age and will lose strength & may lead to Ligament Sprains, Carpal Tunnel & persistent thumb pain. Breaking & crippling of the joints may cause inflammation, pain, stiffness, and deformity. Joint changes affect almost all of our Parents & older relatives. These changes range from minor stiffness to severe arthritis, which then lead to further Knee Replacement or Hip Replacement procedures in a certain age.

If your parents got any signs & symptoms of Bones or Joints problem, or they find themselves in chronic & unbearable Joint Pain or feel exhausted while walking or climbing the stairs. Muscle weakness contributes to lethargy, weakness, and reduced activity tolerance. Joint issues ranging from mild inflexibility to exhausting arthritis known as ‘Osteoarthritis’ are quite common.

Some of our Parents have reduced reflexes. This can be more frequently caused by changes in the muscles and tendons, rather than changes in the nerves. Decreased knee jerk or ankle joint jerk can also occur. People who are unable to maneuver on their own, or who do not stretch their muscles with exercise, may get muscular contractures.

Some of us went through a bad road accident or could face Sports Injuries after involving in sport, these injuries may heal within 2-3 days. But, a week or even year later, some might complain of having Joint Pains that become persistent & relentless with time, which may collapse our entire routine & jobs.
