    What Causes Skin Tanning?

Skin tanning happens when our skin produces melanin (a skin pigment) after being exposed to the sun. So, when a part of our skin is exposed to sun rays for long hours, it changes to a darker color.

People with lighter skin tones often cannot develop an adequate amount of melanin pigment. So, when the amount of melanin is inefficient, it results in sun damage, and the skin gets burned.

How to Prevent Tanning on Face and Body?

A few easy ways through which you can avoid tanning on the face and body include:

    1. Apply Sunscreen Properly

No matter what weather it is, skin specialists always recommend applying a generous amount of sunscreen before going out. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, some basic guidelines for applying sunscreen are:

    • Your sunscreen must have an SPF of 30 or greater
    • It must be water-resistant and should give broad-spectrum coverage, meaning it protects you from UVA and UVB radiation.
    • Always apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before heading outside because some time to soak it into your skin and protect you.
    • Use a good amount of sunblock that properly covers all areas o your exposed body parts and face.
    • Remember to pay attention to your neck, face, ears, and the tops of your feet and legs. And don’t leave any exposed part without sunscreen.
    • Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or soon after swimming or sweating, to be safe while outside.

    2. Use Cap and Clothes

This protective measure is for those of you who can not stay inside even during peak hours of heat due to studies or work. Covering yourself with a cap, cloth, scarf, or shirt is important even after applying sunblock or sunscreen, and it will save your skin from being in direct contact with the sun’s rays and avoid sunburn.

    5. Use a Cleanser and Exfoliator

Cleansing and exfoliating your skin can help you remove all the dirt and chemicals from your face. Make a routine to wash your face at least twice every day, preferably after you return after a day in the sun. Exfoliating helps in the removal of dead skin cells and makes your skin look fresh.
