    • How to treat itchy gums?

Itchy gums can indicate several different conditions. Gum disease, allergies, hormonal changes, and other issues are among them. Identifying the state causing your gums to itch can help you find a treatment and alleviate the itch.

Itchy gums are frequently an early indicator of a potential problem, such as gum disease. Itchy gums can be caused by hormonal changes, new medication, or an allergic reaction. As a result, the condition may be brief or straightforward to treat at home.

More than just your teeth are involved in dental health. Your gums are sensitive, which is the delicate tissue that protects your teeth, roots, and nerves. They, too, require your attention. Without it, gums can develop various chronic dental conditions with severe consequences.

Identifying the source of your itchy gums can aid in the search for a cure. Make an appointment with the best dentist in Lahore if you are unsure what is causing your symptoms. You can rule out some possibilities together until you find the one that explains why your gums itch.

    Causes Of Itchy Gums:

    Gum problems:

Gum trauma or injuries can cause pain, discomfort, and itching. These injuries could result from a physical injury, such as one sustained while participating in sports. Injuries can also occur as a result of behaviors. Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can result in headaches, jaw pain, and itchy gums. E-cigarettes and vaping can also cause gum irritation and itching.

    Plaque Formation:

Over time, a thin coating or film of plaque — a colorless, sticky substance — can form. Mucus and food combine with bacteria to form a plaque overgrowth. Plaque can cause gum disease over time. Plaque buildup can cause gum sensitivity, bleeding while brushing, and itchy gums.

    Allergic Reactions:

A mild allergic reaction can cause itchy gum. If a person has hay fever, they may also have oral allergy syndrome (OAS), which causes itching or swelling of the mouth, face, tongue, or throat after eating raw fruits or vegetables.

    Dry Mouth:

A dry mouth can cause itchy gums. The body should produce enough saliva to keep the mouth moist, but certain medical conditions, medications, or foods may prevent this, resulting in a dry feeling. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day should help relieve itching in the gums.

    Changes In Hormones:

Changes in your natural hormone levels may affect how your gums feel. Itchy gums are more common in women during pregnancy, puberty, menstruation, and menopause.

    Gingivitis:

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, and Periodontal disease is another name for gum disease. Gingivitis is a mild form of disease caused by plaque accumulation. Gingivitis is unlikely to have caused any further complications at this point.

The following are some of the less common causes of itchy gums:

    • Teething in small children
    • Adults (age group 17 and 21)teething usually experience canker sores, oral herpes, or viral infections that can affect the gums and cause tooth abscesses.

    Treatment Options

There are a few simple remedies that people can do right away at home to alleviate gum itching and irritation:

    • brushing teeth
    • flossing, and rinsing with a salt-water solution, and using an antibacterial mouthwash
    • If an allergy causes itching, take an over-the-counter antihistamine.
    • If itching persists or other symptoms appear, a person should consult a dentist. Controlling inflammation and infection is critical for preventing gum itching.

    The dentist may perform the following treatments to solve the gums itching issue;

    Medications:

If allergies cause itchy gums, an antihistamine may alleviate the symptoms.

    Teeth Guards:

Wear a guard while playing contact sports and sleeping to protect your teeth from further damage.

    Plaque Scaling:

Your dentist can use this electric tool to help remove tartar and plaque buildup from above and below your gum line. Brushing alone is unlikely to remove this buildup.

    Lasering:

This procedure removes plaque and tartar and may be as effective as traditional scaling.

    Root planning:

Your dentist may use this procedure to remove severe tartar accumulation caused by receded gums. This provides a clean surface for teeth and gums to reattach to healthy tissue.
