With the help of WHO, about <\/span><b>49,000 health workers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have been trained for this campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The HPV vaccine in Pakistan is<\/span><b> safe, effective, and free of charge. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It can prevent up to <\/span><b>90% of cervical cancer cases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by protecting against HPV types 16 and 18. The side effects are usually very mild, like a little pain in the arm or a slight fever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is a major step because cervical cancer is a serious health problem in Pakistan. It is the <\/span><b>third most common cancer in women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the <\/span><b>second leading cancer in women aged 15 to 44 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite these alarming numbers, many women in Pakistan still do not know much about its causes, symptoms, or prevention. 400\">HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a family of over 200 viruses. Some spread through sexual contact. Most HPV infections are harmless and disappear on their own. However, a few dangerous types can cause changes in body cells that may turn into cancers, especially <\/span><b>cervical cancer in women.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other low-risk types don\u2019t cause cancer but can lead to genital warts. HPV is very common. Almost everyone who is sexually active will get it at some point. This number is higher than the <\/span><b>WHO target of 4 cases per 100,000<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every year, around <\/span><b>5,000 new cases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are reported, and almost <\/span><b>3,200 women die<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the disease. This puts Pakistan among the <\/span><b>top 10 countries with the highest death rates from cervical cancer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The problem is made worse because many women don\u2019t go for screening. Awareness is low, and the country doesn\u2019t have a proper system to record cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"HPV_Vaccine_in_Pakistan_WHO_Support_Rollout\"><\/span><b>HPV Vaccine in Pakistan: WHO Support &amp; Rollout<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><b>WHO study (2021\u20132023)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> found that many cases of cervical cancer go unreported because women don\u2019t have easy access to healthcare. The study also warned that if vaccination is not started, the number of cervical cancer cases in Pakistan could <\/span><b>become three times higher in the next 70 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pakistan\u2019s Elimination Planning Tool<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, if the country rapidly scales up HPV vaccination, screening, and treatment, cervical cancer could be eliminated as a public health problem by <\/span><b>2048<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Taking a big step toward this goal, Pakistan has launched its first nationwide HPV vaccine campaign <\/span><b>in September 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This aims to vaccinate over <\/span><b>13 million girls<\/b> <b>aged 9-14 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Punjab, Sindh, Islamabad, AJK etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This campaign is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), Gavi (the Vaccine Alliance), and UNICEF.
