Coronary artery bypass surgery also termed as coronary artery bypass graft surgery and layman may know it as heart bypass or bypass surgery. It is a surgical procedure to restore normal blood flow to an obstructed or narrowed coronary artery. There are two main approaches to this surgical grafting. In one, the left internal thoracic artery is diverted to the left anterior descending branch of the artery while in the second one the great saphenous vein is taken from the leg and inserted in the heart by attaching one end to the aorta and another end to the obstructed artery. This is the most beneficial treatment method for heart patients as successful grafts typically last long 8 to 15 years.
