About Metodine DF Suspension

Metodine DF Suspension uses include the treatment of intestinal amoebiasis and amoebic dysentery, and clearing amoeba cysts from the bowel. It contains metronidazole, which kills amoeba by damaging their genetic material, and diloxanide furoate, which works inside the bowel to clear the amoeba cysts. Use it only under medical supervision because the dose depends on age and body weight, and alcohol must be avoided during treatment.

Your doctor might give you Metodine DF Suspension for:

• Intestinal amoebiasis
• Amoebic dysentery
• Passing amoeba cysts in the stool without symptoms
• Amoebic liver abscess, along with other treatment

Metodine DF Suspension Dosage and Administration

Always follow your doctor's instructions exactly.

Adult Dosage:

• Each 5ml contains 250mg diloxanide furoate and 200mg metronidazole
• Usual adult dose of diloxanide furoate: 500mg three times daily for 10 days
• Usual adult dose of metronidazole for amoebiasis: 400mg to 800mg three times daily for 5 to 10 days
• 10ml three times daily gives 500mg diloxanide furoate and 400mg metronidazole per dose
• Your doctor will set the exact dose and length of treatment

Children Dosage:

• Over 12 years: same as adult dosage
• Diloxanide furoate up to 12 years: 20mg per kg per day in 3 divided doses for 10 days, not more than 1.5g a day
• Metronidazole for amoebiasis: 35mg to 50mg per kg per day in 3 divided doses for 5 to 10 days, not more than 2400mg a day
• The doctor will work out the ml dose from the child's weight

How to Take:

• Shake the bottle well before each dose.
• Measure the dose with the measuring cup or syringe, not a kitchen spoon.
• Take the doses at evenly spaced times each day.
• Complete the full course even if you feel better.
• Do not drink alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose.

Metodine DF Suspension Warnings

Don't use Metodine DF Suspension if you:

• Are allergic to metronidazole, diloxanide furoate, or any ingredient
• Are allergic to similar medicines such as tinidazole

Metodine DF Suspension Precautions

Talk with your doctor first if you:

• Have liver disease
• Have Cockayne syndrome
• Have epilepsy or a nerve disease
• Have a blood disorder
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Take warfarin, lithium, disulfiram, busulfan, ciclosporin, or seizure medicines such as phenytoin or carbamazepine

Also, remember:

• Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after it
• It may turn your urine dark
• It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so take care when driving
• Your doctor may check your blood count if treatment lasts more than 10 days
• Stop it and see a doctor if you get numbness or tingling in the hands or feet

• Unexplained bruising, sore throat, or infections
