Circumcision Using General Anaesthetic

Circumcision Using General Anaesthetic

Circumcision is a procedure in which the foreskin covering the tip of the penis is removed. During a circumcision, the foreskin is freed from the head of the penis and the excess foreskin is clipped off by the surgeon. The procedure is usually performed within the first week of birth and takes about 5 to 10 minutes to be done. Circumcision generally heals in a time of five to seven days. In our part of the world, circumcision is performed mostly due to religious reasons.
Circumcision is usually done on the kids under the age of 6 months.

Circumcision Benefits

It has been reported by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that the benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks. Studies have shown that the circumcision procedure lowers the risk of getting HIV. The foreskin of the penis has Langerhans cells, which are more likely to attach to HIV cells. In circumcision, the foreskin is clipped off which reduces the risk of developing HIV. Circumcision also reduces the chance of other diseases that are passed through sex. Circumcision has various benefits some of which are as follows:

  • Circumcision results in easier hygiene as it makes simpler to wash the penis.

  • It decreases the risk of urinary tract infections. UTIs are more common in uncircumcised males.

  • Circumcision decreases the risk of sexually transmitted infections including HIV.

  • It results in prevention from numerous penile problems.

  • It decreases the risk of penile cancer and it's less common in circumcised men.

Circumcision Recovery

It usually takes 7 to 10 days for the penis to heal after circumcision. The tip of the penis is likely to be sore at first after the surgery and the penis might look red, swollen or bruised. There might be a small amount of yellow fluid on the tip of the penis as well. Below are some important points related to the recovery of circumcision:

  • It's fine to wash the penis as it heals.

  • Change your baby's diaper regularly, and make sure the diaper is loosely fastened.

  • Plastic ring will drop off on its own usually within about a week.

  • Once the penis heals completely, wash it with soap and water during normal bathing.

Please call the doctor if the child is experiencing fever, signs of infection, such as pus-filled blisters and is not urinating within 12 hours after the circumcision.
