What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is surgery that reshapes the bone, cartilage or skin of the nose. People have it to change the size or shape of the nose, remove a bump, reshape the tip, fix a crooked nose after an injury, or breathe better.
Types of rhinoplasty
Types of rhinoplasty includes:
Closed and open rhinoplasty
In closed rhinoplasty, all cuts are inside the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty, the surgeon also makes a small cut between the nostrils, which helps with tip work and complex surgery.
Septorhinoplasty
This reshapes the nose and straightens a deviated septum at the same time, which can help breathing.
Revision rhinoplasty
A second surgery to correct problems after an earlier rhinoplasty, usually at least a year after the first.
Liquid (non-surgical) rhinoplasty
Fillers are injected to smooth a bump or lift the tip. There is no downtime, and results usually last up to about six months. It cannot make the nose smaller.
Who should consider rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty suits people who:
- Have finished growing, around age 15 to 16 for girls and a little later for boys
- Are in good health and do not smoke
- Have breathing problems from a deviated septum or an injury
- Have realistic expectations
What happens during rhinoplasty surgery?
Before the surgery, the surgeon examines your nose, takes photos and plans the changes with you. You will need to stop aspirin and ibuprofen for about two weeks before and after the surgery. The surgery itself often takes 1 to 3 hours.
- Anaesthesia: you are given general anaesthesia, or local anaesthesia with sedation.
- Cuts: the surgeon makes cuts inside the nose, and sometimes a small cut between the nostrils.
- Reshaping: the bone and cartilage are reshaped. Extra cartilage may be taken from inside the nose or the ear.
- Septum: if needed, the septum is straightened to improve breathing.
- Closing: the cuts are stitched, and a splint is put on the nose.
Most people go home the same day. Arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you for a night or two.
Recovery and results
You will wear a splint for about 1 to 2 weeks and need about a week off work or study. Bruising usually fades in 2 to 3 weeks. Most swelling settles in 2 to 3 months, and final results can take up to a year to show.
Rhinoplasty side effects and risks
Rhinoplasty is generally safe when a qualified surgeon does it in a properly equipped hospital. Common side effects include:
- Swelling and bruising
- Some bleeding from the nose for a few days
- Numbness of the nose
- A blocked feeling in the nose while it heals
Less common risks include infection, a reaction to anaesthesia, breathing problems, an uneven-looking nose, a hole in the septum, scarring, a change in smell and the need for more surgery. Liquid rhinoplasty also has risks. Filler in the nose can block a blood vessel, which in rare cases can damage the skin or affect vision. Get it done only by a trained doctor.
