What is dermatomyositis?

Dermatomyositis is a rare systematic disease causing muscle weakness and skin rash. It is an idiopathic myopathy that also affects the skin. Dermatomyositis worsens quickly and the condition becomes fatal. Autoimmune diseases can increase the risk of developing dermatomyositis in both children and adults.

What are the symptoms of dermatomyositis?

The symptoms of dermatomyositis include;

  • Muscle weakness affects the body functions including the ability to swallow, speak, walk, talk, etc

  • Itchy and painful skin with rashes. This usually affects the skin around the eyelids, chest, and scalp

What are the causes of dermatomyositis?

The actual cause behind dermatomyositis is unknown but autoimmune diseases are known to increase the increase of developing the disease. Dermatomyositis disease is also associated with sun exposure, viral infections, and genetics.

How is dermatomyositis diagnosed?

Dermatomyositis is diagnosed using blood tests showing elevated muscle enzymes level.

MRI is performed to evaluate the muscle inflammations. In severe disease states, a skin biopsy is also performed for the diagnosis.

What is the treatment of dermatomyositis?

There is no absolute treatment for dermatomyositis. However, the symptoms of the disease can be managed using Corticosteroids. To reduce inflammation, autoimmune disease is treated using Rituxumab. Surgery may be needed to remove the calcium deposits from the skin.

Symptoms of Dermatomyositis

The two main symptoms are the skin changing and the muscles growing weaker and weaker.

The skin rash that appears in dermatomyositis is easily spotted as the physical features are very prominent. It is a distinct purplish, reddish color and is patchy. The usual places where this rash manifests are the eyelids or any area that is above the muscles one uses to straighten their joints. These include:

  • Knees
  • Knuckles
  • Elbows
  • Toes

The first sign of dermatomyositis is in fact the rash. However, other reddish rashes might also appear. These typically show up on these areas:

  • Face
  • Upper chest
  • Shoulders
  • Neck
  • Back

These rashes might make the skin look sunburned and feel scaly, uneven and very dry. Other than the rashes, some other conditions and symptoms also might occur, including:

  • A noticeable drop in weight
  • Low fever
  • Inflammation in lungs
  • Increased sensitivity to light

Causes of Dermatomyositis

While doctors have not yet identified the central causal element, they have come up with many theories regarding its development. As per the American College of Rheumatology, it is classified as a disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the cells of its own body. Another explanation developed by scientists, states that the cause behind dermatomyositis is a virus acting on the skeletal muscles.

Furthermore, genetics as an important causal factor behind this condition as this disease seems to run in families.

Risk Factors of Dermatomyositis

Dermatomyositis can affect anyone. Even so, the age groups most susceptible to this condition are the children who are about 5 to 15 years old and adults who are about 40 to 60 years old. The disease is also more common in men than in women.

Experts have also linked dermatomyositis to genetics and have stated that individuals who have a family member suffering from it are much more likely to develop this condition.

Preventive Measures of Dermatomyositis

As the cause is still not known, the prevention is very difficult to conceive. Nevertheless, one could look to the theories which try to explain the causes.

One cause suggested is a virus. So, in order to prevent dermatomyositis caused by virus, one could do well to avoid exposure to viruses by avoiding unclean areas and avoiding being cut by potentially infected things. If the individual feels has family members that have dermatomyositis, he/she should be vigilant for signs of rashes and consult the doctor regularly.
