Talk to Chest Respiratory Specialist on Persistent Cough

person-avatar

Asking for Self, Female, 46 years old, Islamabad

Salam. I went for Umrah by tge end of January 2026 and caught some infection from there. Got fever that went upto 104 and no antibiotics worked at that time. When I came back I had a short stay in Lahore, I went to the emergency and my CRP was 347. I was administered rocephin through IV twice a day for 3 days. After that the temperature became normal but the post infection weakness took a month to recover and I also lost 4kg weight. Now the cough is persistent. I have been to a medical specialist twice and I'm told tgat it's normal. I feel my throat and air pipes swollen up. The cough makes the throat so itchy so I once threw up. I am taking cough syrups. Hot water with honey but it does not seem to go away. I sleep at night while almost sitting as while lying down or changing sides makes me cough. Please advise.

It’s seems to be post viral infection cough which last for 2 months . Kindly do chest Xray and pulmonary function tests to rule out any obstructive or restrictive lung disease . In the meantime try to sleep in prone position and if possible take nubulization with clenil and atem 1ml plus 2ml normal saline bd for 5 days

This sounds like a persistent airways inflammation. Need to know your past medical history, including allergies, family history. Also if it's a dry cough or sputum with it. Exposure to irritants. Further assessment necessary including chest x-ray and CBC as a minimum. It'll be better to book an appointment with a physician of your choice.

Wasalaam… very sorry to hear about your suffering. I can understand that how frustrating this cough can be & when you don’t get a good night sleep for a long time then how your body feels. The mutated Covid virus tends to do that. Did you get the Covid test done when you came back? When was the last x ray done? If it was done, how was it? Do you cough out any sputum or is it a dry cough? If you are coughing sputum then please get Sputum c/s done & take it to a chest specialist or consult me so I can give you right antibiotics. If it’s a dry cough then you can do few things & I hope that would work for you.. Insha Allah… 1. Get an air humidifier & keep it with you wherever you are, if you can’t get one then you can get an electric kettle & boil the water in it & then keep it with you & breath the air. 2. Take an anti allergy, it will ease the swelling in your airways (Tab Fexofenadine 120mg x twice a day for 15 days then 180mg x once a day for 3 months) 3. Before going to bed do this ritual… take steam for 10 min, take 2 tablespoons of any cough syrup which has honey in it, then put Vicks on your chest & back liberally, cover your head & neck, switch on the humidifier & try sleeping with 2 pillows at 1st…. I hope it will make your life easier for now…. Ameen
