Patient Diagnosis: MRSA infection. Current Medication: Vancomycin 1000mg IV, twice daily. Dose History: Completed 10 days of Vancomycin in hospital. Took the first dose at home today. Problem: Approximately 6 hours after the first dose at home, the patient is experiencing a burning sensation from the whole body.
Sometimes this can happen with Vancomycin infusion. Make sure that the infusion is diluted as per manufacturer recommendation and that the infusion is given slowly. You can also give an antiallergic before starting the infusion. If it happens again then reduce the rate of infusion further.
Second thing to consider is what’s the reason to continue vancomycin; as she has already completed 10 days course of vancomycin. Still if antibiotic course is indicated (which will depend upon the type of infection caused, pt’s clinical status and test results) then second option can be to switch to an oral antibiotic to cover MRSA instead of vancomycin. Plz book an appointment with a medical specialist.
Vancomycin is nephro toxic means it damages kidneys so make sure urea creatinine are checked and they are in normal range as its main side effect . Burning sensation can also be due to nerve damage . If any weakness in body or reduced urine or severe burning pains with normal kidney function then needs a medication to treat it
Infusion too fast , phlebitis, concentration high less dilution , old canulla
This often happens after the infusion of Vancomycin. If you have more queries. Book an online appointment with Dr Jazib Atta and get your health issue solved.
Could be due to medications ??
