Asking For Self, Male, 38 Years old, Qatar
I am 38 years old and I had a stammering issue since childhood. When I speak in front of others, I stammer a little, but when I talk alone, I can speak easily without stammering. The tongue is the same, but when I am alone, I can talk fluently, with only a little stammer. However, when I speak in front of someone, I cannot complete my sentences properly. What could be the reason for this, and how can I overcome it
When you are alone, your speech is fluent, but when speaking in front of others, stammering appears. This pattern is very common in adults with stammering and usually happens because of a combination of speech-motor and psychological factors. Through speech therapy techniques, or by taking regular speech therapy, you can overcome this situation. I have mentioned some techniques; if you feel confident, you can practice them yourself. If not, then it is best to visit a nearby speech therapist.
Slow Rate: Practice speaking slowly, with small pauses between phrases.
Easy Onset of Voice: Start words gently instead of pushing hard.
Breath Support: Practice deep breathing and speak while exhaling.
