What is the procedure for a high-order C-section?

C-section is a major surgery that is carried out under anesthesia and involves the following steps;

• Fetal heart rate and maternal health are evaluated to avoid complications during the procedure.

• A catheter is connected, passing through the urethra to empty the bladder.

• Depending on the patient's condition and preference, spinal, epidural, or general anesthesia is administered.

• An incision is made in the abdomen and the uterus. The type of incision depends on the previous history of C-sections and many other factors. An incision can be low transverse or vertical. 

• The baby is delivered through the incision carefully.

• Placenta is removed once the baby is delivered.

• Depending on the case, an incision is closed using staples or sutures.

• The patient is shifted to the recovery room, and pain control medications are administered intravenously.

What are the risks and complications associated with high-order C-sec?

High-order C-sections are associated with greater risks and complications than low-order surgeries. A few of these complications include;

• Excessive bleeding due to previous incisions

• Complications associated with the healing of the incision

• Abnormalities related to placenta

• Complications related to adhesion

• Uncontrolled excessive bleeding.

What can you expect after high-order C-sec?

After the surgery, the patient is shifted to the recovery room and is looked for any signs or symptoms indicating infections. The Foley catheter is removed after 15-18 hours, and the patient is expected to walk a little after every 3-4 hours to prevent the formation of blood clots. The patient is recommended to eat fiber-rich small but frequent meals.
