What is the Procedure for Scaling and Polishing?

The procedure for scaling and polishing mainly includes the following steps: 

Step 1: The dentist will use special instruments to remove plaque and debris gently without causing any harm to teeth. 

Step 2: To remove the hardened masses on teeth surfaces such as tarter, the dentist will use an ultrasonic scaler which helps to loosen the accumulated tarter by vibrations. 

Step 3: The dentist will use water spray that washes away the remaining debris on the teeth.

Step 4: Once the scaling procedure is done, the dentist will polish your teeth.

Step 5: The dentist will use the soft rubber cup which usually spins to remove the stains. 

Step 6: Prophylaxis paste (a special toothpaste-like material)  is scooped up into the cup and spun around on the teeth.

Step 7: In some cases, the dentist uses a pressurized spray of air and water with sodium hydrogen carbonate powder to remove calculus, plaque, and soft debris from your teeth.

What to Expect After Scaling and Polishing?

You can expect the following factors after scaling and polishing;

• It is completely normal to experience mild to moderate discomfort following scaling and polishing. Discomfort typically subsides within several hours, it lasts up to a few days in some cases

• Patients may feel slight throbbing tooth pain.

• Your teeth may feel sensitive to temperature changes or sugary food items after the treatment.

• Patients may feel that the gum tissue becomes more pink in color. This physical change shows that your tissue responds well to the scaling and polishing procedure.

• After the treatment, your gums may feel slightly tender. Hence, brushing your teeth gently on a regular basis is important.

• You should not be eating foods that are hard, crunchy, or chewy (such as raw vegetables or meat). These foods may cause irritation.
