What diagnosis leads to Sinus Lift?

The major diagnosis that may lead to sinus lift include;

  • When the existing bone is unable to hold the placement of dental implants.

  • Inadequate bone thickness

  • Bone loss inside the posterior maxilla because of enamel loss or periodontal disease

  • Pneumatization (paranasal sinuses to increase in volume)

What is the procedure for Sinus Lift?

The procedure for sinus lift involves the following steps:

Step 1: You will acquire local anesthesia to numb the region. The dentist will make a small incision in your gum tissue near the region in which dental implants are intended.

Step 2: The dentist will lightly lift the gum tissue to reveal the underlying bone. They will create a small opening inside the bone to get access to the sinus cavity.

Step 3: The sinus membrane, which lines the sinus hollow space, can be carefully lifted, creating an area between the membrane and the bone.

Step 4: The space created between the membrane and the bone will be filled with bone graft material.  It will act as a scaffold for new bone. The bone graft may be synthetic, taken from every other part of your body (autogenous graft), or acquired from any tissue bank (allogenic graft).

Step 5: Once the bone graft is in place, the incision for your gum tissue will be sutured. Over time, the bone graft will integrate with the adjacent bone.

It takes several months for the bone graft to completely combine and heal.
