A DVT or deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms deep within a vein. The majority of deep vein clots form in the lower leg or thigh. This condition is known as thrombophlebitis when the vein swells. A deep vein thrombosis can rupture and produce a dangerous lung condition known as a pulmonary embolism.
