About Hives

Hives meaning in Urdu is “چھپاکی”. It is a skin condition that causes red, itchy, and raised patches or welts on the skin. Hives are also called urticaria. These patches can appear anywhere on the body and often come and go quickly. They may look like mosquito bites, but are usually larger and more widespread.

This skin reaction can be triggered by allergies, infections, stress, or even heat. In many cases, hives last only a few hours, but sometimes they can persist for weeks. In severe cases, hives may affect breathing and require immediate medical care.

Hives Symptoms

You may have hives if you notice:

  • Raised red or pink bumps

  • Severe itching

  • Swelling in different areas

  • Skin warmth in affected spots

  • Bumps that fade and reappear

  • Triggered by heat, cold, food, or stress

Seek medical help if you notice swelling in your lips, face, or trouble breathing.

Hives Causes

Hives happen when your body releases histamine. This can happen due to:

  • Allergic reactions (food, medication, insect bites)

  • Viral and Bacterial Infections

  • Heat, cold, or sunlight

  • Emotional stress

  • Pressure on the skin due to tight clothes and strips

  • Exercise or sweating

  • Hormonal changes

Hives Risk Factors

You are more likely to get hives if you have:

  • Allergies

  • Asthma or eczema

  • Family history of hives

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Stress or anxiety

  • Infections

Hives Prevention

You can prevent or reduce hives by:

  • Identifying and avoiding triggers

  • Wearing loose, breathable clothes

  • Staying cool and avoiding heat

  • Reducing stress

  • Taking allergy medicines as needed

  • Following your doctor’s advice

Hives Types

The types of hives depend on what causes them and how long they last:

1. Acute Hives

This type of hives comes on suddenly and goes away in less than 6 weeks. They’re usually caused by allergies to food, medications, or infections.

2. Chronic Hives

These hives last more than 6 weeks and may come and go for months or even years. The exact cause is often unclear. They may be linked to the immune system or other health conditions.

3. Dermatographism

In this condition, hives appear where the skin is scratched or rubbed. It’s a common and mild type of physical hives.

4. Pressure-Induced Hives

These happen after the skin has been under pressure, for example, after wearing tight clothing or sitting too long. Swelling may appear hours later and can last a day or two.

5. Cold-Induced Hives

These appear after cold exposure, like swimming in cold water. They can be dangerous if swelling happens in the throat or airways.

6. Heat-Induced Hives

Triggered by heat or sweating, these hives may happen during exercise, bathing, or even emotional stress.

7. Sun-Induced Hives

Some people get hives after sun exposure. These usually appear on areas directly exposed to sunlight.

8. Contact Hives

These happen when the skin touches an irritant like latex, certain plants, or pet saliva. They usually clear up when the irritant is removed.

Hives Diagnosis

To find out what’s causing hives, doctors may:

  • Ask about your symptoms and medical history

  • Perform a physical exam

  • Order allergy tests

  • Recommend blood tests

  • Use a skin prick test for allergies

Hives Treatment

Treatment depends on what’s causing the hives:

Mild Hives

  • Antihistamines

  • Avoiding known triggers

  • Cool compresses or baths

Chronic or Severe Hives

  • Stronger antihistamines

  • Corticosteroids

  • Allergy shots

  • Immune-suppressing drugs

Hives Complications

Untreated or severe hives can lead to:

  • Swelling of lips, eyes, or throat

  • Breathing difficulty

  • Disrupted sleep

  • Anxiety or stress

  • Recurring outbreaks

  • Anaphylaxis (rare but serious)
