Asking For Self, Female 27, lahore
I want to ask whether I can take berberine? If yes how many grams? My HbA1c is 5.5 and I'm a PCOS patient. Currently, I'm taking Myoinositol only. I have heard it is good for people who are diabetic or want to take precautionary measures to take berberine. Please guide. Thanks and regards. Plus, my periods are normal, hormonal tests are also normal. My main PCOS symptoms are hair thinning and hirsutism.
Berbarine supplement is mostly recommended for patients who are insulin resistant (High Fasting Insulin or HOMA-IR tests). Insulin resistance can cause various metabolic disorders e.g. diabetes, prediabetes, Obesity, fatty liver and PCOS etc.
There are many other reasons for Hirsutism and hair thinning e.g. Adrenal and ovarian hormones imbalance. Following tests are recommended:
1. DHT
2. HOMA IR
3. CBC and Ferritin
4. Lipid profile

Have you checked your vitamin D levels as well? because vitamin D deficiency could be a cause of your pcos and hair-fall.
Also, go for myo and d chiro inositol supplementation, they help better to manage pcos.

Dear your hba1c is fine, go for other pcos management options as well. Solely depending on the hypoglycemic medication is not wise option. It is not that being hypoglycemic you will eliminate your cyst. It will help you many just one symptoms i.e insulin resistance. Pcos management needs multiple disciplinary approach. Berberine would not shrink your cyst they will only manage your insulin resistance, and your hba1c is already fine. What about your fasting glucose level? Currently, your main goal should be to avoid large meal to avoid sudden hyperglycemia because of that you can face insulin resistance issue.

Let me make it easy for you, Pcos is a syndroms means it shows more than one symptoms that are linked with each other, and insulin resistance is of them. Still managing insulin resistance is not a single treatment for pcos try to go for other managements as well. and berberine is good for diabetes management and your hba1c is fine means you dont have diabetes you just have insulin resistance. and it can be managed through the glucophage that the doctor advised you already.
