Asking for Self, Male, 22 years old, Karachi
I have undergone 3 endoscopies, the first one revealed only h pylori took its treatment and some of my symptoms were resolved but after a month I again started noticing nausea and loss of appetite again went for an endoscopy and biopsy revealed h pylori and mild intestinal metaplasia. I have started my h pylori treatment currently on 3 different types of antibiotics and ppi's and i want to know about this intestinal metaplasia as my doctor says its a normal finding but I dont think so as I have researched alot and it says its a precancerous condition and can progress to cancer in 4 to 5 years. Please tell me that its not dangerous?
If there is focal intestinal metaplasia (antrum only), and there are no risk factors for progression (family
history, incomplete IM, or persistent H. pylori), then there is no need for further endoscopic surveillance.
o In patients with limited IM and any risk factor, consider surveillance every 3 years.
If there is multifocal/extensive IM (gastric body+/- antrum), then (consider) repeat endoscopy in 3-5 years.
