sometimes old patients who do not walk or eat much can have stool stuck in their rectum. ideally, a per rectal examination should be done in hospital emergency and if stuck, stool should be removed by hand.
otherwise, syrup cremaffin 2 teaspoons every night or tablet laxuberon 2 tablets every night can be tried.
if one of these doesn't work alone, both can be given.

also, if it is new-onset constipation (only a few months and did not have constipation before) hemoglobin and stool for occult blood should be checked. if patient has low Hb or blood in stool or weight loss, then a colonoscopy examination is compulsory.
to rule out other causes of constipation, serum TSH, serum calcium and serum albumin should be checked.
