In Beta Thalassemia Trait, low hemoglobin is caused by genetics, not a lack of iron. Taking iron when it isn’t needed can lead to dangerous iron overload.
What you should do now:
Stop Iron: Consult her doctor immediately about stopping iron supplements. Taking more iron will likely not raise her HB but could damage her organs.
Check Ferritin: Ask the doctor for a Serum Ferritin test to check exactly how much iron is in her system.
Folic Acid: Ask the doctor about increasing Folic Acid, which is usually more helpful than iron for Thalassemia patients.
Test the Father: You (the husband) must be tested for Thalassemia Trait immediately if you haven't been, as this determines the health of the baby.
