Asking for Other, Male, 03 years old, lahore
i want to ask u before an appointment that my son is suffering in thalassemia major disease do u treat this disease from blood transfusion or from proper medicine ? i do not want to give my son a blood transfusion .
both transfusion as well as medicines like chelating agents are given depending on severity and mutation of Thalassemia
Treatment for thalassemia major primarily involves regular blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy to manage anemia and prevent iron buildup. For some, a bone marrow/stem cell transplant may offer a cure. Other supportive treatments include daily folic acid supplements
Blood transfusions: Frequent transfusions of healthy red blood cells are necessary to replace the abnormal ones and treat anemia. In beta-thalassemia major, this can be needed every few weeks.
Iron chelation therapy: Blood transfusions cause a buildup of iron in the body, which can damage organs. Chelation therapy uses medications to remove this excess iron.
Stem cell transplant: A bone marrow or stem cell transplant can cure thalassemia by replacing the faulty stem cells with healthy ones from a compatible donor. However, finding a matching donor and the procedure itself can be challenging.
Folic acid supplements: This B vitamin helps build healthy red blood cells
