Talk to Internal Medicine on Skin/ Food Allergy

person-avatar

Asking for Self, Female, 23 years old, Karachi

Few weeks back I developed swelling in my hand and foot which was associated with pain and itching. I got admitted in hospital and my condition was diagnosed as Acute Urticaria and since then I've been taking steroids and anti allergies(tapering the meds gradually as per drs prescription ). But it isn't diagnosed yet what caused this allergy. Either it's from some food or what.My main concern is and question is I have consulted multiple drs and almost everyone gave assurance but still while I am taking the meds I still develop swelling on my hand then it resolves but isn't as severe as it was initially. I know there is allergy diagnosis center in Islamabad but is there any thing or way of diagnosis in Karachi. Thanks

Yes all the tests were done at that time even some blood tests were done also to rule out any heredity causes which came negative. The rest of the blood tests were fine.

Yes I have, but there's no option to attach documents in this thread. Should I post my query again and attach the documents with it?

Try to recognise what you are allergic to one by one.
Keep on taking antihistamines like Rigix 1 + 1
Deltacortil tab 1 +1+1 x 7 days, then 1+1 x 7 days; then once daily for seven days.

I'm already on antihistamines and Deltacortil since past 4 weeks. Tapered Deltacortil to 1 as per doctors prescription.

Is this possible to identify what I'm allergic to even if I'm taking medicines? Or it can be identified once I stop taking them?

Hi
There are lots of reasons for allergy so it is very hard to tell you without knowing your history and having checked your all investigations or tests you had before. It could be due to insect bite, contact allergy with different things, food allergy and also to medications. C1 estrase level are checked for hereditary cause. Eosinophils and igE antibodies are important. So you need to see a doctor in person mainly dermatologist or medical specialist to have a complete discussion about it. Also long term steroids have so many side effects and since you are young i would suggest not to take deltacortil for longer time.
Hope to answer your questions.
Thanks and regards

With Thanks
I have read your query.
As per history, its Acute urticaria.
You can check Agha Khan Hospital for following test: Serum IgE levels, Skin allergen/Prick/Patch testing.
Till then continue Antihistamine (Dual-- morning Plus evening, preferably non sedating). and start montelukast 10mg HS.
Once done with Labs, you are welcome for follow up.
