I am reaching out regarding my 2.5-year-old son. He has not started speaking yet, although he can hear properly — we have had his hearing tested, and the results were normal, Alhamdulillah.
He understands many things and expresses his needs by holding our hands and leading us to what he wants. However, he does not use any words yet. We are concerned about his speech development and would like to know if this might require speech therapy or any other form of evaluation.
Kindly advise us on the next steps or if an online consultation is possible.

Please consult a speech therapist and have him evaluated if he isn’t speaking at all. If a child is not combining two words by the age of two, they should be seen by a speech therapist.

I would recommend consulting with a speech and behavior therapist first. After the assessment, you can begin speech therapy, and working alongside the therapist will allow for more focused and intensive support for your child’s progress

At 2.5 years of age, we do expect children to be using words to express themselves, even if their sentences aren't fully developed yet. It's a positive sign that your son understands language and communicates non-verbally by guiding you, but the absence of spoken words at this stage does suggest a delay in expressive language development.
Since you've already had his hearing tested and results are normal, the next step would indeed be a detailed speech and language evaluation. This will help us understand his strengths and areas that need support — including how well he understands language, his current communication style, and what might be holding back his speech.
I would highly recommend starting speech therapy as early intervention is key. Online consultations and therapy sessions are also very effective for this age group if in-person sessions aren’t possible right now.
