As a speech therapist, I would advise that by 6 years of age a child’s speech should be mostly clear and understandable. If some words and sentences are unclear, it may indicate a phonological or articulation disorder, which can improve significantly with proper speech therapy. Difficulty with wearing socks, shoes, or hair styling, along with irritability, may suggest sensory sensitivity. Concerns about memory and attention should also be evaluated. I recommend a complete assessment by a Speech and Language Therapist, and if needed, an Occupational Therapist, along with a hearing test. Early evaluation and intervention lead to much better outcomes.
