Asking For Father, Male 81, Lahore
My father is 81 years old,I am attaching his ultrasound report where in Serum PSA test has been advised. I have read some studies which don't recommend PSA testing after 70 years age to avoid false diagnosis and over treatment. He is taking duodort capsules and have no symptoms other than frequent urination in night which might be due to blood pressure medicine(he is taking nefime cc and tenormin for BP).
Please suggest whether we go for serum PSA or can skip it?
The decision to perform PSA should be discussed in detail with your Urologist. You should ask any queries and concerns here. it is true that PSA levels should not automatically be done as a screening tool. But there is also no age limit in performing a PSA test.
Do serum PSA and tell me how many times he gets up for voiding?
According to AUA guidelines screening starts at 50 years to 70 years.
PSA is not a sensitive or specific test that is why there are different types of PSA
your father is already on Duodart, which reduces PSA as well.
PSA should be done after proper discussion between the patient and his urologist and if we assume 10 10-year life expectancy.
