Anterior prolapse, also called cystocele (SIS), occurs when the supporting tissue between the woman's bladder and vaginal wall weakens and stretches, causing the bladder in the vagina to swell. The anterior prolapse is also known as the prolapsed bladder. The contraction of the muscles that support your pelvic organs can cause an earlier prolapse. This tension occurs during vaginal delivery or chronic constipation, severe coughing or heavyweight. The previous prolapse also tends to cause problems after menopause when estrogen levels decrease. In mild to moderate anterior prolapse, non-surgical treatment is usually effective. In more severe cases, surgery may be required to keep the vagina and other pelvic organs in proper positions.
Women who have many pregnancies, deliver vaginally or have long or difficult childbirth are at higher risk.
