Bronchial tubes are the structures that carry air to and from your lungs. Inflammation in the lining of these tubes results in a condition called bronchitis. Bronchitis can be acute the one due to a common cold that gets better in a few days to a week or it can be chronic. Chronic bronchitis can be a result of smoking. It is persistent inflammation and irritation of the lining of bronchial tubes. Several repeated episodes of acute bronchitis can also lead to chronic bronchitis. This situation requires serious medical attention as chronic bronchitis is one of the conditions leading to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 

Symptoms of Bronchitis

Symptoms for acute and chronic bronchitis can be:

  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Mild fever
  • Chills
  • Mucus that can be yellow, greenish, and rarely blood stained
  • Chest congestion

Causes of Bronchitis

Viruses that cause flu are the most common cause of acute bronchitis. These viruses are widespread and people can catch these easily fro affected people and infected surfaces
Chronic bronchitis is caused by cigarettes smoke, toxic fumes and gases, airborne pollution and pollutants from diesel-burning plants.

Risk Factors of Bronchitis

Risk factors that enhance the occurrence of acute and chronic bronchitis include:

  1. Exposure to cigarette smoke can increase the chances of getting bronchitis. If you smoke or are exposed to passive smoke you are at an elevated risk for acute and chronic bronchitis.
  2. People with weak immunity elderly, infants, children and others who catch infections easily are also at increased of getting bronchitis.
  3. If your work environment has particles or fumes that can irritate lungs and throat you are at an enhanced risk of acute and chronic bronchitis.
  4. Heartburn and repeated episodes of acid reflux also pave the way to bronchitis.

Preventive Measures of Bronchitis

To date, there are no absolute ways found for prevention from acute and chronic bronchitis. However, taking the following measures can help.

  • Avoid smoking and if already doing it find ways to quit smoking. 
  • Reduce exposure to lung irritants like smoke, dust, toxic fumes and pollutants. one way to do this is using a mask to cover your nose and mouth.
  • Go for flu shots annually.
  • Get vaccinated for pneumonia.
  • Frequently wash hands to reduce exposure to germs.
  • make conscious efforts to protect yourself from passive smoke. 
  • Heat up your living place with electric systems rather than hot air as this increases chances o bronchitis. 
  • Living by a busy road or living close to diesel-burning plants also increases the risk of bronchitis.

Types of Bronchitis

Bronchitis has two types:

  1. Acute Bronchitis
  2. Chronic Bronchitis
