Summary about Musculoskeletal Disorders

Musculoskeletal Disorders, otherwise known as MSDs, target the human body’s muscles, bones, and joints. This group of diseases is responsible for several conditions leading to severe issues such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Osteoarthritis. Repetitive tasks, poor posture, age factors, or injuries are often reported to be the primary causes of MSDs. Once diagnosed, medication, physiotherapy, and in severe cases, surgeries are required to treat or manage the condition.

Causes of Musculoskeletal Disorders

There are no particular causes of musculoskeletal disorders. However, a few of the risk factors include;

  • Age: Older individuals are more prone to the disease.
  • Lifestyle: Sedentary lifestyles that come with poor posture habits can weaken the muscles, increasing susceptibility to musculoskeletal issues.
  • Genetic Makeup: DNA structures are heavily responsible for passing down MSDs. Therefore, people with a family history of MSD have a higher possibility of developing it.
  • Obesity: Obesity increases the risk of musculoskeletal disorders as excess weight directly impacts the bone and joint structure.

Common Symptoms of Musculoskeletal Disorder

The noticeable signs and symptoms of MSDs are;

  • Pain or Discomfort: The pain can be constant or intermittent and may remain localized or affect a variety of areas.
  • Stiffness: Reduced flexibility or tightness in the joints or muscles is a common symptom.
  • Swelling: Inflammation can cause noticeable swelling around the affected area, such as a joint.
  • Mobility and Weakness: MSDs affect mobility as they reduce the motor functions of the impacted body regions. This change can occur either in the form of strength or overall disability. Their ability to withstand pressure is also impacted negatively by the disease.
  • Fatigue: MSDs can directly cause fatigue or lead to sleep loss due to the excessive pain the individual feels.
  • Joint deformity: Joint deformity is another expected symptom of MSDs. People suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis may experience a heightened level of pain and discomfort.
  • Redness and Warmth: Inflammation in the impacted regions leads to skin redness, swelling and unusual warmth..
  • Muscle twitching or spasms: Muscle twitching or spasms are also likely to occur when faced with such diseases.
  • Difficulty in daily tasks: A patient’s daily routine is directly influenced by the connected symptoms of MSDs, hence affecting the overall quality of life.

Diagnostic Tests

  • Blood test
  • CT scan
  • MRI
  • X-ray

Treatment for Musculoskeletal Disorder

The severity of the symptoms can help determine a suitable treatment plan. Some common medications include:

  • Acetaminophen
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Topical gels and creams

In case of intense and unbearable pain, a doctor may recommend prescription use of opioids.
