Summary about Pulmonary Hypertension in English

Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries of the lungs and the right half of the heart. In the form of pulmonary hypertension, small arteries in your lungs called pulmonary arterioles. This obstructs the circulation in the lungs and increases the pressure in the pulmonary arteries. As pressure increases, the right lower ventricle (right ventricle) needs to use more force to pump blood into the lungs, eventually weakening and weakening your heart muscle. Some forms of pulmonary arterial hypertension are serious diseases that get worse and sometimes fatal. Although some forms of pulmonary hypertension cannot be cured, treatment can help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Symptoms of Pulmonary Hypertension

The symptoms of pulmonary hypertension usually do not appear until the disease has progressed. The following are the most common signs and symptoms of pulmonary hypertension:

  • Shortness of breath during routine activities, such as stair climbing.
  • Fainting spells, Fatigue, and dizziness also can be symptoms.
  • Swelling in the abdomen, legs, or ankles, chest pain, and bluish lips and skin, may occur as the strain on your heart increases. 

Symptoms vary in severity, and a patient may or may not experience all of them. Even minimal activity can trigger some of the symptoms in the later stages of the disease. Other signs and symptoms include:

  • Irregular heartbeat (palpitations or some strong, throbbing sensations)
  • Progressive shortness of breath during exercise or activity
  • Passing out or dizziness
  • Racing pulse
  • Difficulty breathing at rest

Causes of Pulmonary Hypertension

Changes in pulmonary arteries which lead to pulmonary hypertension may be caused by:

  • problems with smaller branches of your pulmonary arteries 
  • lung diseases or shortage of oxygen in your body (hypoxia)
  • conditions that affect the left side of your heart
  • blood clots cause narrowing or blockage in your pulmonary arteries
