Pericarditis is inflammation and irritation of the pericardium, the thin membrane of the sac that surrounds the heart. Sometimes pericarditis caused the chest pain. Acute chest pain associated with pericarditis occurs when the irritated layers of the pericardium rub against each other. Pericarditis usually begins suddenly but does not last long (acute).
