Who Is An Eye Specialist?

An eye specialist (ماہرامراض چشم), also known as an ophthalmologist, optometrist, eye doctor and optician, specializes in the medical and surgical care of eyes and the issues related to the visual system. Sight is among our most crucial senses as 80% of what we perceive comes through our sense of sight. This is why visual impairments may strongly affect the quality of life.

Data shows that in Pakistan, the age and gender-standardized prevalence of blindness was 2.7% among adults 30 years of age and older.

Consult an eye specialist in Islamabad before your minor eye condition gets worse.

How many types of Eye Specialists are there?

There are three main types of eye specialists. They are characterized based on the treatment they provide.

1- Ophthalmologist:

Ophthalmologists focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and injuries related to the eyes and visual system.

Complete eye care includes eye examination, eyesight tests, and medical and surgical eye care. It also involves the diagnosis and treatment of visual issues caused by other medical conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension.

2- Optometrist:

Optometrists are specialists in the field of optometry. They are trained in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye disorders and vision care. They receive pre-professional undergraduate training and four years of professional optometric training. An optometrist is officially known as a DO - Doctor of Optometry.

Vision issues and visual acuity are also diagnosed by an optometrist, who is licensed by the state to perform eye examinations. Additionally, they have expertise in eye exercises, low vision aids, and other forms of vision rehabilitation services, as well as prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses.

3- Optician:

Opticians work closely with other eyecare professionals like ophthalmologists and optometrists to deliver comprehensive eye care. Their expertise includes; analyzing and interpreting eye prescriptions; deciding the lenses that best suit a person's needs; overseeing ordering and verification of eye-related items for the patients; and distributing, replacing, adjusting, and repairing contact lenses and eyeglasses.

The eye specialists are classified according to their area of specialization, as discussed below:

  • Retina Specialist - Diagnoses and treats infections of the retina and retinal eye conditions, including a torn or detached retina.

  • Pediatric eye specialist - Diagnoses and treats eye conditions in children, including the misalignment of eyes, congenital defects, differences in vision, and problems with refractive errors.

  • Neuro Ophthalmologist - Specializes in vision problems related to your nervous system, including vision problems due to brain injuries or diseases like trauma, a stroke, or an infection.

  • Corneal specialist - Deals with diseases of the cornea including corneal dystrophies or keratitis.

  • Glaucoma specialist - A glaucoma specialist treats painful eye conditions in which intraocular pressure increases.

What Conditions can Ophthalmologists Treat?

Ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other eye care specialists collaborate with patients to maintain healthy eyes and clear vision. At least once a year, you should see your optometrist or ophthalmologist in Islamabad to get your eyes checked.

An eye specialist is trained to recognize abnormalities in your eyes. They examine the internal and external structure of your eyes to detect certain eye-related conditions. They may also test your ability to focus and coordinate your eyes and see depth and colors accurately.

People generally consult an ophthalmologist when they have:

  • Partial or complete loss of vision

  • Eye injuries, pain, or inflammation

  • Eye conditions such as glaucoma

  • Health conditions affecting the eyes, including diabetes and high blood pressure

  • Poor vision that needs specialist care

Ophthalmologists are also involved in the following procedures:

  • Cataract surgery to replace the lens of a person's eye

  • Refractive or laser surgery, which involves reshaping the cornea to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness, or astigmatism

  • Surgery to correct misalignment of the eyes or strabismus

  • Surgery to remove cancers, such as melanoma, from the eye

  • Treatment to repair damage caused by trauma

  • Comprehensive diagnostic services provided include evaluation of visual acuity, refraction, slit lamp evaluation, ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, pachymetry, gonioscopy, fundus photography, and visual field testing.

Common Eye Diseases in Pakistan

The following are the eye diseases that are commonly found in Pakistan. These mainly  include:

Allergies - The most common are seasonal allergies due to pollen grain or mold spores.

Amblyopia - Vision loss in the age group of under 40 years. This condition is also known as “Lazy Eye.”

Myopia and Hyperopia - Both are problems with eyesight. Myopia is short-sightedness and hyperopia is far-sightedness.

Squint/Strabismus - The condition in which both eyes do not align properly. One eye turns inwards, upwards, downwards, or outwards, while the other one focuses on one spot.

Uveitis -  Inflammation of the middle layer of eye tissue.

Intraocular Cancer - It is cancer inside the eyeball. The most prevalent intraocular cancer in adults is lymphoma and melanoma. In children, retinoblastoma may occur.

Cataracts - It is the clouding of the lens of the eye. According to recent data, around 8 million people in Pakistan suffer from the disease.

How Much Does an Ophthalmologist Cost?

The fee range of an experienced ophthalmologist usually ranges from 1500 to 3500 PKR. However, it may vary depending on the type of care and treatment procedures you undergo.
