Asking For Self, Male, 29 Years old, Nawabshah/ Karachi
Assallamalikum Docs, I need your assistance, please. I am a healthy 29-year-old male. I was obese for a long time, but over the past few years, I’ve managed to reduce my weight to a healthier range. Currently, I’ve started incorporating physical activities, including medium to extreme workouts, along with a good diet. This approach is working, as I’ve lost about 8–9 kg I was 95 kg two months ago, and now I weigh around 84–85 kg having height of 5’-10”. My question is about taking magnesium glycinate (500 mg once a day). I’ve read, researched, and heard from some doctors that it may help with calcium absorption and could potentially reduce calcium plaque buildup in arteries. I am concerned about the possibility of high cholesterol or plaque deposits in my arteries, which might lead to cardiac issues in the future. Regarding my blood pressure, it used to be around 140–130/80–86 mmHg when my weight was 95 kg. I was a light smoker too Now that I’ve reduced my weight, it has improved slight
for proper diagnosis and management need to be visited by a senior general physician specialist
You can do a cardiac calcium score test to see your risk for an ischaemic heart disease.

Cardiac Calcium Score test is different than calcium Serum levels?

Check your blood calcium levels before supplementing yourself.Avoid supplements if there are no symptoms of deficiency or requirement

Okay Doc. Currently, I am avoiding foods or meals containing calcium. I am not sure if I have any plaque deposits I was just speculating based on my blood pressure readings.

Dear you don’t need to worry about it, just go and do a test called “ Serum Calcium “ level , Dr Sikandar here

Thank you Doc. I was assuming it might have happened because my blood pressure was 140/90. However with dietary and lifestyle changes I have managed to lower it slightly to 125/85. Now I want to maintain normal blood pressure which is why I am asking if magnesium can help lower it further.

the plaque build up in capillaries is because of atherosclerosis. its a slow process but is faster if your weight, blood pressure and lipids are not in the normal range. try to maintain a healthy weight, and lifestyle to reduce your risk
Dear, do some tests. Fasting lipid profile, S/electrolytes, s/Ca and S/Mg levels. If they are derranged then go to treatment. Otherwise live your healthy life. And maintain your weight atleast under 80kg.

Thank you. I am hesitant to get the tests done because I am worried about the results showing dangerous levels or something irreversible. However I will try to proceed with them.

keep doing what you are doing..great job at bringing your weight down! if your bmi is between 18.9 and 24. 9, you should be okay in sha Allah..your current bmi i believe id 26.9 based on your weight of 85 kh and height of 5'10. So try to lose a bit more weight and aim for at least 150 min per week of moderate-intense exercise. If you do that and eat healthy, you dont have to worry about plaque buildup, in sha Allah. Plaque buildup can not be reversed but you can prevent it from getting wieth the lifestyle changes you have made. Also, you did a great jon by quitting smoking as that really damges your arteries as well.

You dont necessarily need to supplement your diet with magnesium if you are not deficient in Mg. That being said 500 mg every other day is okay. Better option is to get it through diet. Following are the dietary sources for it:
Common foods that contain magnesium include:
legumes, nuts, and seeds
whole grains
spinach and other leafy vegetables
fortified breakfast cereals and other fortified foods
yogurt, milk, and other dairy products
