Asking for Wife, Female, 25 years old, Dubai, UAE
Hi Doctor,
My wife taking Tenovir 300 mg (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) from last 3 weeks for Hepatitis B treatment. Her periods got delay this month. I want to ask if this medicine really cause menstrual cycle changes?
Hello! I hope you are doing well. Really sorry to hear about your wife's disturbed cycle. As you mentioned She is taking Tenovir for Hep B treatment. Tenofovir belongs to group of medications called Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors. There is no reported evidence that this group cause disturbance in female menstrual cycle. There are studies going on since 2009 but no solid evidence so far. Morever I have never seen a patient throughout my career having disturbed cycle due to Tenofovir. So there could be something else that might be disturbing the periods. There are a number of causes 1) Any other medicine 2) Use of contraceptives 3) Depression and disease related anxiety 4) hormonal disturbance. A detailed gynaecological History would be required to probe the exact cause as previous cycle duration, amount of bleeding, any pain etc is very much relevant in proper diagnosis. One more thing that we need to consider is to find out the cause of Hep B transmission as well. Please Provide the above-mentioned details or feel free to get in touch. I will be more than happy to help. Many thanks, Dr Urwa

Dear Doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
1. No other medicine,
2. No use of contraceptive,
3. No anxiety as well,
4. Which test is required to check these hormonal disturbance, as far I read on the internet Tenofovir cause hormonals changes.
Secondly, we don't know the cause of Hep B transmission. She was pregnant and gave birth to baby boy 6 months before only. During pregnancy we came to know about Hep B and we did few test also, it's in inactive stage. She just went back to Pakistan and started this treatment few weeks before only. Just for your information, I did the test as well and it was negative.
Hey! First of all, please reply to the original comment otherwise we don't receive the notifications and your query might be missed. You might have read the effects of different phases of menstrual cycle on Tenofovir concentration in the blood during periods. Which is different from effects of Tenofovir on periods. It's opposite to that actually. However, considering that all answers are negative and doesn't explain why the delayed periods so we need to probe further. Please ask her to get in touch and let's have a detailed history before prescribing unnecessary tests.
