Hello, I’d be happy to explain. A bone scan is a test that looks at the bones to see whether there are any areas that are unusually active. In someone who has had breast cancer, it may sometimes be recommended to check whether the cancer has spread to the bones, particularly if there are concerning symptoms such as persistent bone or back pain, or if other tests suggest possible bone involvement. The scan is generally straightforward. A small amount of a radioactive tracer is injected into a vein, and after a few hours a special camera takes pictures of the skeleton. The radiation exposure is relatively low, and the tracer is gradually cleared from the body, mainly through the urine. Importantly, a bone scan does not automatically mean that cancer has spread. Arthritis, previous injuries, inflammation and other non-cancerous conditions can also cause areas of increased activity, so the results need to be interpreted alongside the patient’s symptoms and other scans.
