Assalamu Alaikum Doctors, I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to ask for your advice regarding my mother’s health. She is 45 years old and has a strong family history of cancer—her brother and cousin had blood cancer, and her sister had breast cancer. We’re concerned about her risk and want to know what tests or screenings she should do at this stage. Could you please guide us on the necessary checkups or if any specialist referral is needed? I would recommend you visit accessible available oncologist for opinion. Familial tendencies of various cancer depend on the type of cancers prevalent in family history. HBOC - BRCA, BRCAness, Lynch, FAP, Li-Fraumani, VHL, PJS, MEN syndrome and other syndromes carry different risks for different subsets of cancers. Advice regarding screening varies as per family history as well as current symptoms. Some generalized screening tests might include ultrasound breast and axilla +/- mammography, ultrasound abdomen, chest xray and some tumor markers, even some invasive endoscopic procedures. But i guess, getting them done blindly would be needless and it would be better to take guidance from accessible Oncologist.
